This is an estimate based on circumference measurements, not a clinical body-composition test. Results can vary with measurement technique.

About the U.S. Navy method

Developed for military fitness assessments, this method estimates body fat percentage from neck, waist and (for women) hip circumference, combined with height. It skips expensive equipment entirely - a soft tape measure is all it takes - while staying reasonably close to more precise methods for most body types.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the Navy body fat method?

It's typically within a few percentage points of more precise methods like DEXA scans for most people, making it a reasonable estimate for tracking trends over time rather than a lab-grade measurement.

Where exactly do I measure my waist and neck?

Measure your neck just below the larynx, and your waist at the narrowest point (or at navel level if there's no narrowing). Women also measure the hips at their widest point. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin.
